Professional Bio

Dr. Bill Thierfelder recently stepped down from the presidency of Belmont Abbey College after a transformative 21-year tenure marked by growth, gratitude, and virtue. His historic presidency has been marked by a reinvigorated Catholic identity of the college, record enrollment, expanded degree programs, the seventh largest athletic program in the United States, new and enhanced campus facilities, a successful $150-million capital campaign, and a strengthening of community partnerships, including the addition of a $300-million Hospital on campus.

Before becoming president of Belmont Abbey College, Dr. Thierfelder successfully led several corporations that specialized in sports medicine, sports law, and sports business. He recently launched a new company, MVP Hands, LLC, that consults with NFL and NCAA Division I football teams to enhance their on-field performance.

Dr. Thierfelder is a licensed psychologist and received his master's and doctoral degrees in Sports Psychology and Human Movement from Boston University. He is a former National Champion and Record Holder, a two-time NCAA All-American, a Division I Coach, and a member of the NCAA Presidents' Council.

Dr. Thierfelder is an inductee of the Sports Faith International Hall of Fame, which includes world-class athletes, coaches, and team owners, such as Vince Lombardi and George "Papa Bear" Halas. He is also the author of Less Than A Minute To Go: The Secret to World-Class Performance in Sport, Business and Everyday Life, with a foreword by Coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Dr. Thierfelder has testified before the United States Congress in matters related to religious liberty. He was born and raised in New York City and is a Knight of Malta and an Oblate of Belmont Abbey Monastery. He and his wife, Mary, have ten children and live just outside of Charlotte, NC.
