Act 48

Act 48 of 1999 requires all Pennsylvania educators holding Pennsylvania public school certification (including Instructional I and II, Educational Specialist I and II, Administrative, Supervisory, Letters of Eligibility, and all vocational certificates) to participate in ongoing professional education. Beginning July 1, 2000, Act 48 of 1999 requires persons holding Pennsylvania professional educator certification to complete continuing education requirements every five years to maintain their certificate status as active whether employed or not. As a PPA member benefit, PPA will process your Act 48 credits. Please send all of your Act 48 inquiries and copies of certificates to be processed to act48@papsy.org. Act 48 credits will be processed each Monday, unless the PPA Office is closed.

As a reminder, please send your certificates as you earn them so they can be processed in a timely manner. Do not wait to submit all certificates for your renewal at once near the time of your submission deadline with the Department of Education. Please note that if you submit a large number of certificates processing may take longer than 1 week.

Programs offered through agreement with the Department of Education (CE programs that fall within CE requirements/regulation of the State Board of Psychology)

  1. Writing or Teaching - According to the State Board of Psychology, psychologists may obtain CE credits through professional writing or teaching CE programs or graduate-level courses for licensure. When submitting courses taught for Act 48 processing, please include a copy of the course syllabus which should state the course name, dates, and course content.
  2. Attending or completing programs approved by APA, AMA, or certified by the Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology to offer CE credit.
  3. Presenting courses that are approved by APA, AMA, or certified by the Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology to offer CE credit.
