Program Description: Over the last 10 years, the core competencies for treating suicidal patients have been modified as a result of the growing empirical base of suicidiology and changing social conditions. These changes include (1) embedding the role of collaboration throughout the assessment and intervention; (2) appreciating the role that cultural factors can have on suicidal behavior; (3) basing assessments on an idiographic approach; (4) ensuring practitioner self-care; (5) using therapeutic risk management; and (6) using interventions that appreciate the role of loneliness and isolation in creating or maintaining suicidal behavior. This workshop will review those changes and their implications for the assessment and treatment of suicidal behavior.
Program Learning Objectives: At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the importance of embedding collaboration throughout assessment and interventions.
2. Identify the benefits of including cultural factors in assessment and interventions.
3. Clarify the value of an idiographic approach to assessments and interventions.
4. List ways that self-care can enhance the quality of patient services.
5. Describe the importance of a therapeutic risk management approach.
6. Use interventions that appreciate the role of loneliness and isolation in creating or maintaining the risk of suicide.
