The Essentials of Treating Suicidal Patients 2024

Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States and the most frequent crisis encountered by mental health professionals. This home study reviews basic information about the treatment of suicidal patients. Using APA's model of evidence-based practices it looks at the role of empirical evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences in conducting effective psychotherapy. Consideration will also be given to supplemental interventions, medications and hospitalizations, and how psychotherapists can respond when patients are not making adequate progress.

Program Learning Objectives. At the end of the program, participants will be able to describe basic information about

  1. List the three factors in the APA definition of evidence-based practice
  2. Describe the essential elements of effective psychotherapy with suicidal patients
  3. Describe how clinical expertise and responding to patient needs and preferences helps to facilitate good outcomes
  4. List the advantages and disadvantages of interventions that could supplement psychotherapy with suicidal patients
