Summary of the internship experience: The primary goal of the Crescenz VA Psychology Internship Program is to train interns to be competent in the general practice of health service psychology, and specifically to develop skills in the provision of high-quality evidence-based mental health care. Our training program incorporates a diversity of clinical experiences to provide interns with well-rounded, generalist training that will equip them to work successfully in a variety of clinical environments, including interdisciplinary team settings. Given the nature of our patient population, opportunities to gain experience working with trauma and PTSD are infused throughout all our rotations. The internship program will highlight the integration of mental health services into primary care consistent with the patient-centered medical home. Training in evidence-based practices will be a key component of training throughout the internship experience. Interns will take an active role in developing their own training plan and in adjusting it to meet their needs and emerging interests. A cornerstone of our training philosophy is an emphasis on breadth while also allowing for in-depth training in focused areas of interest. The purpose of our internship program is to prepare interns for post-doctoral residencies or entry-level positions in health service psychology.

Summary of the internship experience: Rockland Psychiatric Center (RPC) is one of the largest psychiatric facilities in New York State (NYS). It is a NYS-Office of Mental Health inpatient and outpatient facility that provides compassionate and comprehensive care to adults who have serious and persistent mental illness. RPC has a total of 13 inpatient units serving approximately 325 adult patients. The units are divided into three divisions: Admissions, Forensics, and Community Reintegration. Under these divisions, there are opportunities to work with a variety of specialty populations including: multilingual/multicultural patients, geriatric patients, forensic patients, including those under the Criminal Procedure Law status, patients with trauma histories, polysubstance and/or alcohol abuse, and personality disorders. The Internship Program subscribes to a Practitioner-Scholar Model. Our philosophy of training is to provide interns with the ability to apply the learned research-based practices and theoretical perspectives into clinical practice with adults who exhibit a wide range of clinical diagnoses. The Internship Program currently offers two positions. The program provides interns with clinical training in psychological treatment and services on our inpatient units only. Interns complete two 6-month rotations. Interns identify two units of their preference, but the two units cannot be from the same division. This rotation structure provides interns with a broad exposure to multiple clinical populations and/or treatment modalities. Upon selection of units, interns become a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and learn how to effectively work with various disciplines, including other psychologists, psychiatrists, medical doctors, social workers, rehabilitation specialists, nursing, nutritionists, and therapy aides. Interns are expected to attend treatment planning meetings, morning rounds, community meetings, and any other team meetings that may arise. For each rotation, interns have a minimum caseload of five individual cases and co-lead at least four groups. Groups are co-led with different psychologists to gain experience learning various modalities with a wide range of patients. One of the groups is co-led with a fellow intern. Psychological Assessment: Interns complete a minimum of four assessments during the year. This includes administration of tests, scoring, interpreting data, report writing and diagnostic presentation of results. Assessments are supervised by the testing supervisor. Supervision: Supervision is guided by the nine Profession-Wide Competencies as outlined by the APA Standards of Accreditation. All clinical treatment provided by interns is under the supervision of Licensed Psychologists. Supervision of Externs: Interns have the opportunity to learn and gain competence in how to transition from supervisee to supervisor by supervising two externs over the course of the training year. RPC is a welcoming learning environment for all interns. We welcome applicants from ALL backgrounds. Applicants who are bilingual and/or multilingual are encouraged to apply.

Special benefits offered to interns:  The Internship Program is a full-time 12-month commitment beginning in August. Full health insurance benefits, including medical, dental, and vision are provided. Interns are off all Legal Holidays and have 3 Professional Leave Days for Dissertation Defense or attendance to conferences. Interns share an office with another intern. Each are provided with their own desk, computer, and phone.
