Presenter: Laura Crothers, DEd, NCSP
Laura M. Crothers, DEd, NCSP, is a Professor of School Psychology, the Rev. Martin A. Hehir, C.S.Sp. Endowed Chair in Scholarly Excellence, and the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, School of Education, at Duquesne University. She studies childhood bullying and indirect aggression in adolescents, and has published over 50 articles, presented over 30 papers or posters, and written numerous books on this topic. She is considered an expert on bullying by the National Association of School Psychologists.

Talking about Bullying at School: Tips for Kids, Parents, and Teachers
In this session, we will review the symptoms of bullying at school, why bullying happens, what the effects are kids and schools, and what kids, parents, and teachers can do to help or get help.

  • The session will include information about the different kinds of bullying, including physical, verbal, indirect, cyber/technological, as well as sexual harassment
  • We will review the predictors for kids becoming bullies or victims
  • We will talk about different theories about why bullying occurs and who is frequently targeted by bullies
  • Information will be presented regarding the consequences of bullying for perpetrators, victims, bystanders, and school systems
  • We will review the most effective strategies in providing help to kids, parents, and teachers, as well as how to seek help for kids, parents, and teachers
