Over the years
the Ethics Committee of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association
(PPA) has been charged with promoting high ethical behavior among
psychologists. One way in which it does this is through education.
In 2003, participants in the annual ethics educators
conference recommended that PPA develop a series of home study
programs that provide an overview of the essential elements of
ethics for professional psychologists. Using primarily reprints
from the Pennsylvania Psychologist, but also articles from the
newsletters of other state psychological associations, PPA has
compiled six home study programs designed to do that.
These home studies cover a wide range of ethical topics such as
the foundations of ethics, self-care, boundaries, confidentiality
and record keeping, and other professional issues (see list below).
Psychologists who complete all six home studies will receive a
Certificate of Completion indicating that they have completed
the six core home studies concerning ethics. All are worth 3 hours
of continuing education, except for Foundations of Ethical Practice
which is worth 6 hours.
The Certificate of Completion
of the home study ethics series may be particularly useful to
those who teach ethics, run internship sites, serve on hospital
ethics committees, or otherwise hold positions where proficiency
in ethics is valued. Psychologists can get these home studies
by contacting Katie Boyer at the PPA office (717-232-3817).
The complete list of ethics home studies are:
Introduction to Ethical Decision Making;
Ethics and Professional Growth;
Foundations of Ethical Practice;
Confidentiality, Record Keeping, Subpoenas, Mandated Reporting
and Life Endangering Patients;
Ethics and Boundaries; and
Competence, Advertising, Informed Consent, and Other Professional
Issues
To obtain your Certificate of Completion of the
Ethics Series, please
complete the application and return to PPA.
