"Psych Tips" for the Workplace

MOTIVATE YOUR EMPLOYEES WITHOUT SPENDING A DIME

We all know that people respond more favorably to positive comments than to criticism, but we often forget. Instead of recognizing what employees do well, we tend to notice negatives — mistakes, things that out of place or something not completed.

If you switch your attention to positive details, you will energize your employees to give you their best. Here are some tips:

• Recognize effort. For example:

“I notice that you always come in on time. I appreciate your commitment.”

“You’ve had a lot going on in your family recently, and I notice that you’ve still managed to maintain a great attitude here at work. Thank you.”

• Address employees individually on a regular basis to tell them what you value about them:

“I’m amazed to see how you work with potential customers. You let them know you are really listening and not just pushing merchandise. I can tell you do your homework on our line of products. I’m glad you’re on our team.”

“I heard you on the phone just now, and how you kept an upbeat tone when the customer complained. That’s a hard thing to do, and I appreciate your choice to stay positive.”

• When praising employees, give a detailed description of the behaviors you liked. It not only reminds them of what they are supposed to do; it also motivates them to live up to the description. For example:

“You seemed to be in a bad mood when you came in this morning. I really appreciate how you turned it around, and made some great contributions at the meeting.”

“I know you are really disappointed about not getting that promotion. Despite that, your work has not suffered a bit. It shows real flexibility and commitment to continue to initiate projects, set goals and meet deadlines after that setback. I want you to know I recognize how difficult that must be.”
