Managing Your Boss
“Management” is not just for bosses.
As an employee you can have significant influence on your supervisor
by forging a productive alliance. Not only will your company benefit;
in addition you will stand out when it comes time for evaluations
and promotions. Here are some tips:
Is your supervisor a bottom-line person, or does s/he
want all the details? Offer information in a format that
will get your boss’s attention.
Are you helping your supervisor meet his/her goals?
Knowing the specific goals will keep you abreast of where the
department is going, and alert you to opportunities where you
can be proactive.
Do you have a clear understanding of what is expected
from you? If your boss is detail-oriented, offer him/her
an outline of how you perceive what is expected, and request honest
and immediate feedback. If discussion is more your boss’s
style, initiate informal conversations about your role and responsibilities.
Do you do all you can to make your boss and department
look good? When your supervisor looks good, you look
good. Always be on the lookout for ways to make your supervisor
look good, and seize those opportunities. Give your boss ideas
on ways for your department to have a more productive impact.
As the department solidifies and shows meaningful contribution,
your credibility will rise, and so will your opportunities for
more responsibility.
